Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Interns will have approximately 22 face to face client hours per week. One day per week will be an assessment day, either in clinic or an individual case. The intern will arrive in time to help set up and confer with the team about the clinic plan. The day will end with a group supervision session (90-120 minutes) discussing the cases and formulating diagnoses and initial recommendations. The rest of the week will be a combination of therapy hours and training hours, including didactics and supervision. The work days primarily consist of business hours (8-5 or 9-6). A licensed psychologist must be available any time interns are seeing clients. Some interns may require additional time for report writing during the steeper portion of the learning curve, which may result in extra hours.

Program Description

Description of Facility and Training Program

 

Northwest Neurobehavioral Health, LLC is a multidisciplinary clinic in Meridian, ID (a suburb of Boise).  We serve a wide range of individuals from a very extended geographical range.  While we are a generalist practice in many ways, our reputation in the community is predominantly for work with neurodiverse clients and their families (including people with autism spectrum disorders, neurological conditions, etc.). Intern caseloads are predominantly pediatric, with some adult cases as well for both assessment and therapy.  While many of those clients will be neurodivergent in some way, presenting clinical issues include a broader array of treatment needs including depression, anxiety, mood disorders, behavior disorders, OCD, etc.. The Psychology team includes psychologists, neuropsychologists, psychology interns, and practicum students.  Other counseling staff include licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), Master’s in Social Work therapists doing their postgraduate training and social work interns. Our multidisciplinary clinic also offers medication management, occupational therapy, and speech/language therapy services.

The primary purpose of the Internship in Health Service Psychology at NNH is to provide both breadth and depth of training via exposure to and immersion in a variety of clinical experiences.  Interns will receive training and clinical experience in a broad array of treatments and assessments and will work with many fellow professionals in the field. An individual supervisor will remain consistent throughout the year. However, interns will receive rotating secondary individual supervision, will participate in group supervision, and group didactics weekly. This provides exposure to a variety of approaches and theoretical orientations. Interns are expected to conduct individual and family and group therapy, individual psychological assessment, and to participate as a member of the team in multidisciplinary diagnostic assessment clinics. Exposure to an array of evidence-based treatment modalities for specific conditions such as autism spectrum disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, trichotillomania, etc. will be part of the training.  Interns will also participate in program development, and will present capstone education trainings to the staff on a clinical topic of their choosing. Interns participate in supervision of doctoral practicum students from September through June. 

The internship at NNH is APA-accredited as of February 11, 2025.
