Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Interns provide a full range of services offered by college counseling center professionals including phone screenings, initial consultations, individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, outreach and consultation to the campus community, and supervision provision. Interns also engage in ongoing relationship-based consultation with one of our 6 cultural houses on campus. They also receive at least 2 hours of didactic instruction and 4 hours of supervision weekly (includes 2 hours of individual supervision). Interns provide crisis intervention services on a regular basis. Interns may choose from concentrations in Alcohol and other drugs, eating disorders, outreach, or group.

Interview process description:
By December 9th, we will welcome approximately 30-40 applicants via email to schedule a 50-minute phone or video interview. You will have the opportunity to also meet with the Training Director. We will also inform you if we have decided not to interview you by this date.  Interviews are provided by CAPS staff members who are part of our Intern Selection Committee.  Interviews entail general questions as well as require responses to clinical scenarios.  Candidates will also be asked to briefly describe their work with a client.  Interviews typically occur during the break between fall and spring semesters.  We recognize that traveling to several sites for interviews is very expensive and stressful for applicants, so we do not require this.  However, if you'd like to visit us to get a feel for our site after your interview, you are certainly welcome.  Applicants may contact the Associate Director for Training at dspiker@purdue.edu to arrange for a visit after they have interviewed.  Please be assured that whether or not you choose to visit will not impact our ranking decisions.  Current staff and interns may also be contacted by email to answer any further questions about our training at any time.

Program Description

Thank you for your interest in the comprehensive training in health service psychology provided at Purdue University Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).  Our program has been continuously accredited by APA since the year 2000 and our most recent site visit led to reaccreditation through 2027.  Mentorship is the cornerstone of our internship and we strive to provide collaborative relationships to support interns’ professional and personal growth throughout the internship year.  Interns gain intensive supervised experience in all roles of a university counseling center psychologist including individual and group therapy, assessment and diagnostic interviewing, crisis intervention, relationship-based outreach and programming, and supervision.  Awareness, sensitivity, and education to promote multicultural competence and humility is infused throughout all training activities.  Although our agency emphasizes time-limited therapy, there are some opportunities for longer term therapy.  Experience providing supervision to practicum students is provided. In the very rare circumstance that practicum students are not available, peer supervision is utilized to address this competency area.  Other unique aspects of our training program include gaining additionally marketable skills in one of our concentration areas (e.g., AOD, group therapy, outreach).  Outreach and consultation skills are further developed with the opportunity to cultivate liaison relationships with one of our cultural houses on campus including the LGBTQ Center, the Black Cultural Center, the Latino Cultural Center, the Asian American and Asian Resource and Cultural Center, the Native American Educational and Cultural Center, and the Veteran’s Success Center.  Purdue has a very large international student population which is also represented in the students seeking support at our center.  

CAPS has an interdisciplinary and growing staff which offers a unique combination of mentoring from seasoned psychologists and vibrant early career professionals who are passionate about training.  A review of our website will provide further understanding of the diversity of clinical interests and areas of expertise available.  We foster a positive relational environment through staff retreats, monthly staff lunches, in-house workshops for all staff, weekly case conference teams, and we celebrate both personal and professional accomplishments together.  We have regularly received feedback from previous interns that the quality of supervision received on internship was excellent and that they felt very well-prepared for the fast pace, and increased complexity, of university counseling center work.  In order of frequency, interns completing training at Purdue CAPS have gone on to be employed in university counseling centers, private practice, academia, community mental health centers, and Veterans Affairs.
