Brief description of the typical work day for a postdoc at this training site Fellows spend time in both ambulatory and inpatient hospital settings during their training year. The fellowship is designed to support the achievement of fellow goals and objectives through a combination of clinical experiences, weekly didactics, weekly supervision by licensed psychologists, teaching opportunities, and completion of a research project. Pediatric Psychology Fellows spend approximately 50-60% of their time in direct patient care activities. A significant portion of their direct clinical care time is spent providing coverage, along with an attending psychologist, on the Inpatient Consultation/Liaison (C/L) service and Outpatient Medical Coping Clinic. Program Description

Akron Children’s Hospital offers a 12-month pediatric psychology fellowship program beginning in September of each year. There are two pediatric psychology fellowship positions open for the 2026-2027 training year.

The goal of our fellowship program is to produce excellent psychologists who can:

  • Function independently as psychologists in a medical center and/or outpatient practice setting, providing evidence-based psychological assessment and treatment to children with a variety of medical and psychological conditions;
  • Acquire state licensure to practice psychology; (fellowship meets criteria for licensure in Ohio)
  • Possess the requisite knowledge and skills to pursue board certification in Child Clinical and Adolescent Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Program objectives/values are adapted from Recommendations for Training in Pediatric Psychology: Defining Core Competencies Across Training Levels.

Our program focuses on clinical training in pediatric psychology, with an emphasis on evidence-based practice, which is consistent with a scholar-practitioner model of training. A list of specific objectives and competencies is available upon request. Fellows are evaluated on progress towards competencies quarterly. A copy of the evaluation form is available upon request. Information regarding grievances and due process is also available upon request.

Fellows pursue:

  • Advanced training in pediatric psychology through core curriculum and general training objectives.
  • Specialty training in clinical areas of interest through Individualized Training Plan and training activities

In addition to clinical rotations, Akron Children’s fellows participate in weekly didactics, a professional development seminar, scientific and professional presentations and complete a research project.

Training occurs at the Akron campus, and fellows complete training on the inpatient medical floors and the medical ambulatory setting.

Akron Children’s Hospital’s psychology fellows are provided a variety of clinical opportunities to strengthen their training. Pediatric Psychology Fellows will alternate in providing coverage for the Inpatient Behavioral Medicine Consultation/Liaison (C/L) service. Our C/L service operates Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. Fellows will have opportunities to assist patients with a variety of medical concerns including pain, diabetes, headache, cystic fibrosis, seizures, and medical trauma.

In addition to the year-long core rotation, fellows can select additional clinical rotations to meet their individual professional goals. Pediatric Psychology Fellows can choose up to 4 additional, 6-month rotations. Subspecialty options include:

  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Epilepsy monitoring/treatment program
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • Autism Diagnostic Clinic
  • Endocrinology and Diabetes
  • Healthy Active Living Clinic
  • Headache Clinic
  • Behavioral Sleep Medicine
  • Behavioral Feeding
  • NICU/Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • Sports Medicine
  • Gastroenterology
  • Gender Affirming Clinic

Other rotations may be available based on fellow interest and professional goals. Our fellowship values trainees from any background and encourages any interested applicant to apply.
