Other Fringe Benefits (not indicated above): Doctoral interns receive up to 15 days for vacation/sick leave; 5 professional development days for completing their dissertation then may use time for attending external trainings and taking the licensure exam; and some HBFF holidays off. Interns may be assigned to work some holidays and will be given the opportunity to take days off to make up for working. At least once per month, HBFF offers free CEU trainings to staff and interns on topics of mental health, addiction, ethics, and cultural competence. At the Center City site, the gym is available. Both sites have trails and nature areas nearby for going for walks and engaging in self-care. In addition to the stipend, an additional $300 per month is provided in order to make an effort to offset costs to doctoral interns seeking health insurance.
Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Doctoral interns complete mental health diagnostic intake assessments/interviews, provide individual and group therapy, engage in reciprocal consultation as part of the multidisciplinary team, and are active in providing in risk assessment and crisis intervention. Limited testing opportunities may be available as testing is often not advised for our patients in early sobriety. Doctoral interns co-lead group supervision of master's level students in the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies. Doctoral interns are provided 4 hours of supervision and 2 hours of didactic training each week along with additional time to meet with mental health providers informally for consultation. Additional tasks include email, documentation, treatment planning, continuing care recommendations, and possibly providing patient and graduate school lectures. Doctoral interns treat patients in an addiction treatment facility focusing on the mental health issues co-occurring with addiction. Treatment is focused on assessment and stabilization to reduce risk of relapse and promote mental health. Doctoral interns are assigned to 3 rotations during the training year. They provide services on their assigned unit(s). Doctoral interns are trained to be well rounded providers and learn to work in a fast paced environment providing trauma informed, ethically sound, individualized care with cultural humility. All patients in treatment are in the day treatment or residential level of care for addiction services and additionally may be provided medical, psychiatric, spiritual, and mental health services. The program follows the disease model of addiction and utilizes the 12 Steps. Our patient population is diverse. Patients come from around the country and around the world to attend treatment. Our population represents the full range of socioeconomic status. We welcome those of all religious beliefs and non-believers. We offer an additional support group for individuals identifying as LGBTQ+, recognizing the additional risk in regards to their addiction and need for a sense of community in this population. We have a history of training supervisees identifying of minority status. The training program is dedicated to providing a safe training environment for all our trainees. We welcome and encourage diverse applicants. Training supervisors are dedicated to providing multiculturally-appropriate supervision and bringing diversity into the supervision experience. The training program has developed a diversity sub-team to provide a structure for trainees and staff to improve inclusion experiences and improve our efforts to recruit and retain diverse staff and engage in best practices in providing clinical services.

Interview process description:

Interviews will be provided virtually using WebEx technology and occur from about 8:30-12:30 CST. Interviews typically occur in mid-December through late January.  Applicants will have the opportunity to learn about the training program from the training director and supervisors in a 1 hour introductory video in advance. They will attend a Q & A meeting with current doctoral interns to help the interviewees determine if the program is a good fit.   Applicants are interviewed by staff clinicians in a three part interview process with multiple staff involved. Interview questions include the themes of assessment, therapy, and professional development. We also offer an optional open house for those who want to tour our facilities before making their decision about ranking our site.

Program Description

The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation/Hazelden has been saving lives and restoring families from addiction for more than 70 years. We offer every patient the best chance of lifelong recovery. The training program is part of the mental health department within a residential addiction treatment facility treating co-occurring disorders.  The mental health department provides treatment to individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders, focusing on mental health symptoms and disorders which may affect individuals' ability to maintain sobriety and stability in order to engage in active recovery. Interested applicants are not required to have previous experience working with substance use disorders. Rather, this training program is seeking applicants ultimately who share an interest in gaining education, training, and experience with a wide range of general and wide ranging clinical presentations including co-occurring disorders. The internship program focuses on training doctoral interns to be generalist health service psychologists able to work in a variety of settings, including addiction treatment centers, with skills to treat a wide range of symptom presentations. 

The program is offered at the Center City location serving adults, and the Plymouth location designed to serve adolescents and young adults.  Both the adult and adolescent/young adult tracks provide the opportunity for trainees to experience rotations on treatment units. Each rotation includes experience in consultation with a multidisciplinary team, diagnostic assessment, risk assessment and crisis intervention, individual therapy, and group therapy. The additional opportunity for training in treatment of health care professionals as a rotation may be available in the adult track. Interested applicants apply for the location/track they are most interested in.  Applicants may apply to be considered for both tracks or just one.  Ultimately, the doctoral intern will be assigned to the site/track matched with in the formal match process.

We would like to underline that there are opportunities for doctoral interns to further develop self-awareness, cultural sensitivity and humility and utilize their cultural knowledge in clinical practice in our program. We value this work being done at the training program, the mental health department, the site, and the organizational levels as we have developed programming to promote growth in the training program all the way up to  to the work being done by the national HBFF DEI committee. The internship training supervisors are dedicated to providing multiculturally-appropriate supervision and bringing diversity and equity into the supervision experience. Note that over the past 10 years, 60% of our interns continued training at HBFF as postdocs at one of our Minnesota locations (Center City, Plymouth, or St. Paul) or in Newberg, OR.  Over 50% of our interns and postdocs became employees of HBFF at one of our locations around the country.
