Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site The typical work day varies based on the intern's rotation and specific details are included in the online brochure. Broadly speaking, in addition to weekly supervision (individual and group) and weekly didactics, clinical duties for interns include mental health screening and triage, suicide risk assessment, psychological assessment, crisis intervention, individual therapy, group therapy, brief counseling, sexual assault prevention/intervention, risk assessment, documentation and report writing, and consultation with other disciplines. Interview process description:

Applicants will be notified prior to December 15, 2026 whether they will be scheduled for an interview with FMC Devens. 

Due to the nature of the Bureau of Prison's hiring process, if selected based on APPI online application, you will be requested  to complete a USAJobs application as a part of the application in mid-November. If you are considered Best Qualified, you will be invited to interview  here at FMC Devens. 

Each applicant will be scheduled to participate in a virtual interview with FMC Devens Psychology Services staff and interns. The interview will include the different elements of our department and the focus of the internship program at FMC Devens. This will also allow applicants to interact with supervisory psychologists. Interviews typically take place in January.  

Offers of internship positions resulting from the computer match are strictly contingent upon satisfactory completion of the background investigation process. For individuals selected through the matching process, a field investigation will follow to verify the information provided in interviews and required forms is accurate. During the background investigation, you will be required to disclose any medical or mental health diagnoses and treatment. Medical and mental health records are reviewed by FBOP physicians given the nature of a correctional setting. No single diagnosis is grounds for ineligibility, and each case is reviewed individually.

Program Description

FMC Devens is one of only six medical centers within the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), an agency housing approximately 150,000 inmates nationwide. The institution is comprised of two elements: the medical center, which is a secure prison environment, and the minimum-security federal prison camp. The medical center houses approximately 1000 adult male inmates with chronic medical, mental health, and substance abuse problems, sexual offenders, pre-trial inmates referred by the judicial system for forensic evaluations, and general population inmates.  The camp houses approximately 100 relatively-healthy general population inmates. The entire FMC Devens inmate population reflects diversity in terms of ethnicity, culture, age, gender expression, religion, geographic origin, education, offense, length of sentence, and socioeconomic status.

The FMC Devens’ internship program’s mission is to train interns as emerging professionals, facilitating each individual's development into competent, entry-level professional psychologists effectively functioning in a correctional environment. To maximize the breadth of exposure afforded during training, interns at FMC Devens complete rotations that specifically emphasize the unique client populations housed at this institution: Sex Offender Management and Treatment, Treatment of Severe Mental Illness, Forensic Evaluation, Substance Use Treatment, and Correctional Psychology. The training year is divided into quarters, with the Correctional Psychology rotation being mandatory and the other three rotations selected from the aformentioned rotations. 

Interns learn experientially by directly providing a variety of psychological services to inmates and by collaborating with multidisciplinary staff in the furtherance of inmate care. Interns gain experience with mental health screening and triage, suicide risk assessment, psychological assessment, crisis intervention, individual therapy, group therapy, brief counseling, sexual assault prevention/intervention, risk assessment, documentation and report writing, and consultation with other disciplines. In addition, interns have the opportunity to provide clinical supervision to doctoral level practicum students. One to two weekly didactics focus on correctional and clinical psychology domains, mental health case law, and the treatment and management of sex offenders.
