Program Description

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:The North Bay Consortium (NBC)is a comprehensive post doctoral training program that is well integrated into the Kaiser Permanente health care system. NBC residents are placed at one of four medical centers: Santa Rosa, San Rafael, Vacaville or Vallejo. The program accepts 17 psychology residents, with clinical opportunities available on the Adult Team, Child and Family Team, Addiction Medicine, and Behavioral Medicine.

Our training philosophy is to foster clinical competence and professional identity through the mastery of basic and specialized skills. Depending on which site they choose, residents are involved in DBT group programs, teen and child programs, eating disorder programs, behavioral medicine, emergency services, etc. Emphasis is placed on the role of the psychologist in a multi-disciplinary medical center. The residency consists of three components: 1) Regular exposure through active participation to all facets of outpatient services; 2) Professional guidance through sessions of formal supervision (two hours of individual supervision with licensed psychologists and two hours of group supervision); and 3) Regularly scheduled local and regional training seminars.

One half of the residents' time is spent providing direct services to Kaiser members through individual, group and family therapy. Over the training year residents are expected to complete conduct psychological assessment and to complete a program evaluation project. Departments of Psychiatry at each site provide mental health to Kaiser members in the form of evaluation, psychotherapy, psychoeducational programs and intensive outpatient treatment. The focus of treatment is on brief therapy using CBT ,ACT, DBT and IPT. Evidenced-based treatments are offered for depression, anxiety, child/adolescent-family problems, eating disorders, etc.  In addition, completing the Resident Program Survey twice a year is a requirement of completing the program.
