Brief description of the typical work day for a postdoc at this training site Combination of outpatient intakes and return visits, leading or co-leading group therapies, training activities including group or individual supervision and didactic training and consultation. Work in the community and in medical center on some days. For the postdocs embedded in OBGYN and / or Pediatrics Medical Departments, the patient care visits are usually shorter within a health psychology framework and the clinical day starts with a brief medical team huddle. Postdocs embedded in medicine join their cohort for training days and group supervision, and see their supervisors individually at other times during the week. Their consultation role includes more teaching and training in their departments as needed. There are opportunities for socializing with other mental health trainees, in other training programs on site and through community benefit projects.

Program Description

The East Bay Consortium (EBC) consists of postdoctoral residencies across three site locations in the Bay Area: Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, and Antioch Medical Centers. We are centrally located and in communities with diverse populations, unique landscapes and striking views of nearby Mount Diablo. The EBC is well integrated with our medical system. Some of the postdoctoral residency positions are embedded in  outpatient mental health departments: there the postdocs may select from specialty teams and treatment tracks to create a training year that is tailored to their particular interests such as Eating Disorders Treatment, Addiction Medicine & Recovery Services, Adult or Children’s Psychiatry, and specialized treatment tracks. We offer a full range of services and all outpatient levels of care for broad exposure during the training year.

In addition, there are psychology postdoctoral residency positions embedded in primary care medical settings at the sites' medical office buildings; some of  these positions focus exclusively on Obstetrics and Gynecology and reflect our collaborative programming in Maternal Infant Resilience. Others are embedded in Pediatric Primary Care or Pediatric Health Psychology. Our medical offices provide a full range of preventive mental health and specialty treatment and consultation for individuals and families.

Our training philosophy is to foster clinical competence and professional identity through supervised mastery of advanced clinical practice and specialized skills. Training in evidence based treatment gives residents a range of interventions, while supervision keeps a focus on individualized treatment or growth edges for each post doc. There is an emphasis on the role of the psychologist in a multi-cultural community, an outpatient setting and integrated with the medical center in providing quality health care to its members
