Program Description

The South Bay Consortium is a program supported by Santa Clara & San Jose Medical Centers. The Consortium began in 2006 as part of a restructuring of the larger Northern California Regional postdoctoral training programs. The goal was to provide an integrated and comprehensive training program while retaining local support. The South Bay Consortium is a comprehensive program that is well integrated into the Kaiser Permanente health care system and focuses on specialty training. Santa Clara offers 2 APA accredited training positions in the Department Behavioral Medicine Embedded Primary Care (Adult and Pediatric tracks), 1 position in Adult Psychiatry, 1 position in Child Psychiatry and 1 position in Addiction Medicine.  San Jose offeres 2 APA accredited training positions the the Adult Psychiatry Department, 1 position in Behaviorial Medicine Adult Psychiatry and 2 positions in Child Psychiatry. The residents’ required clinic time is 40 hours per week during a 12-month period. One-half of the residents' time is spent providing direct services to clientele through individual, group, family, or couples therapy and conducting psychological assessments. In addition to the required two hours of individual supervision weekly by a licensed psychologist, residents also participate in two hours each of group supervision, case conferences, team meetings, and weekly seminars. Residents are also encouraged to attend the monthly grand rounds for the general staff. In addition to weekly seminars and individual and group supervision, residents are expected to attend a monthly seminar, which is also open to supervising psychologists for continuing education credits. Initial seminars focus on Ethics and the Law. This ensures all postdoctoral residents have a sound working knowledge of California's professional code of conduct.  Completing the Resident Program Survey twice a year is a requirement of completing the program.
