Program Description

The Nevada Psychology Internship Consortium (NV-PIC) offers a one-year, full-time doctoral internship beginning and ending in August. The start date for the 2024-2025 cohort is August 12, 2024. NV-PIC's mission is to prepare doctoral psychology interns to 1) provide, with cultural humility, broad psychological services to underserved clients in the Nevada public behavioral health system and 2) retain NV-PIC graduates to continue to serve the people of Nevada. NV-PIC represents the collaborative effort of two sites within one state division, the Division of Public and Behavioral Health, to share resources and faculty for the purpose of providing a diversified educational program for psychology interns. Training takes place at training sites in Las Vegas and Carson City: Rural Clinics Carson City (Carson City, NV); and Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services (Las Vegas, NV).

*For the 2024-2025 year, Rural Clinics Carson City will be inactive. Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services will be the only site accepting applications for 3 positions. Please check back for updates and/or changes to this status, or email the program at dpbhnvpic@health.nv.gov*

NV-PIC provides a range of clinical and didactic experiences that represents the necessary depth and breadth required for future professional practice within psychology.  Across training sites, interns are required to complete 2,080 hours of training during the course of the internship year, of which at least 25% are spent in the provision of direct face-to-face clinical services. This includes completing an average of 10-20 hours per week of face-to-face direct service delivery. Interns are expected to achieve the goals and objectives of the internship program and to abide by the APA Code of Ethics, the requirements of the NV-PIC training program, and the policies and procedures of the NV-PIC training sites.

For 2024-2025, the SNAMHS internship site has been updated with the following tracks for a total of 3 positions:

All interns receive training in assessment (record review, clinical interviews, report writing), Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and evidence-based interventions (adapted for our clinical population).  All interns will work with one or more long-term therapy clients for the training year. Our agency is a dynamic environment that addresses the crisis between mental health and the criminal justice system. SNAMHS is in the process of pivoting services to meet the forensic demands of the state. The internship tracks at SNAMHS provide an opportunity to work in a setting that contributes to change, including policies, regulations, and committee work.

SNAMHS Inpatient Assessment & Intervention Track (Program Code: 2323-11) 1-2 positions

Interns on this track will have exposure to and gain knowledge of a psychiatric inpatient population in 1 or both hospitals. Interns will engage in activities to support patients and treatment teams, such as providing psychological assessments, individual and group therapy, program development, and consultation services. Assessments include personality, malingering, cognitive, intellectual, differential diagnosis, and suicide/violence risk.

SNAMHS Forensic Evaluation Track (Program Code: 2323-15) 1-2 positions

Interns on this track work with individuals in an inpatient forensic facility who were court-ordered for evaluation and treatment competency restoration. Interns learn case law related to adjudicative competence and learn how to conduct thorough record reviews, write forensic evaluations, interview forensic patients, and conduct psychological and forensic testing. Interns can learn forensic assessment instruments. Interns learn to conduct comprehensive risk assessments for self-harm and violence. They receivie training in intervention with this population.

All interns who match to NV-PIC sites must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States. NV- PIC does not sponsor work visas. Interns must successfully pass a fingerprint-based background check before beginning employment and must provide results from a tuberculosis (TB) screening test from the previous 12-months. Instructions for providing this information or completing the background check and TB screening will be sent out to all who match after the match is complete. NV-PIC will reimburse these costs. Please note: if HR has a concern about the results of a background check, employees have 30 days to explain. Many factors are considered and HR handles this on a case by case basis based on the state division’s policy.

•  SNAMHS is a state facility that serves vulnerable populations. Therefore, individuals working at SNAMHS must be fully vaccinated by the start date. There is a process for submitting religious or medical exemptions.
