Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Workload at university counseling centers varies with the ebb and flow of university's academic schedule. Within this framework of periodic shifts, interns are expected to work an average of 40 hours a week. Approximately half of intern's time is spent providing direct clinical services to students. This includes initial consultations and walk-in crisis time, 10 to 12 individual clients, co-leading therapy groups, presenting workshops, provision of supervision, and five hours of assessment related activities. During the academic year, interns spend three hours a week on their outreach consultation project in addition to other outreach activities. Interns receive at least seven hours each week of supervision and other training experience. This includes at least two hours per week of individual supervision and three hours a week of group supervision. You will also typically spend one to two hours per week depending on the semester, providing supervision (which includes providing individual supervision to doctoral practicum students and/or undergraduate REACH Peers.) Interns also receive three hours a week to work on their dissertation or other professional development project. For interns with interest in program development and administration, this time could be allocated for such activities as a professional development project.

Interview process description:

Zoom interviews will be offered January 2-12, 2024. Applicants will be contacted on the phone to schedule interviews in December. Each interview is 50 minutes in length and conducted by the internship training director and current interns. Following the interview, candidates will also have an opportunity to ask questions to current interns via telephone or Zoom. Applicants are welcome to contact the Training Director and/or other staff members after the interview to learn more about our program. In lieu of an in-person open house, intern applicants will be able to view videos of professional staff introductions and an agency tour on our website.

Program Description

USU CAPS doctoral internship in Health Service Psychology provides quality training focused on eight basic areas of psychological practice important in a university counseling center or similar setting: individual therapy; group therapy; psycho-educational and psychological assessment; outreach and consultation activities; providing clinical supervision; awareness of and responsiveness to diversity issues; ethical and professional behavior; and professional development. While interns at CAPS are expected to function semi-autonomously, they can also expect to work and learn in an atmosphere characterized by respect and support. Overall, the goal of our internship is to create mentoring relationships and a learning environment in which interns can hone their skills and grow professionally in a safe and supervised setting. We respect the dignity, diversity, and individuality of all. This drives our effort to develop an inclusive multicultural community in which differences are respected and valued.

In addition to a number of required core experiences, our training allows an intern flexibility in choosing elective experiences consistent with their professional goals. Through the outreach consultation and professional development projects, interns have the opportunity to customize their internship. Coordinating these two projects, an intern can create a specialty rotation or focal area.
