Linden Oaks Behavioral Health was awarded full APA accrediation on September 3, 2021. Internships at Linden Oaks are offered in three separate tracks: adolescent acute care, adult/eating disorder acute care, and health psychology.
The overarching goal of the Doctoral Training Program is to provide the opportunity to develop competence in the application of psychological knowledge and practice to clinical problems in a complex medical setting. Combining evidence-based didactic training and clinical supervision, interns are socialized to be entry-level professionals who employ critical thinking, self-reflection, and strategies of scholarly inquiry.
Rotations open for internship placement:
All interns, regardless of rotation, will complete 3 integrative psychological batteries during the training year.
1. Adolescent Track: (2 positions)
The interns in this position will spend 6 months in adolescent inpatient followed by 6 months in adolescent outpatient mental health or vice versa.
The Adolescent Inpatient Unit at Linden Oaks Behavioral Health is located on the main hospital campus. This 29 bed acute care unit serves adolescents from age 11-18. The average length of treatment on this unit is 5-7 days. The intern on the Adolescent Unit is expected to fully manage a 3 patient caseload and is responsible for individual therapy sessions, family and support sessions, discharge planning, and other case management duties.
The Adolescent Mental Health Program is located at the Linden Oaks Behavioral Health Outpatient Center. The program services patients at both Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) levels of care who are addressing mental health diagnoses including mood disorders, anxiety disorder, psychotic disorders and personality disorders. The average length of stay for adolescents participating in this program is 3-4 weeks. The theoretical orientations include Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The intern will carry a caseload of 5-6. Duties include individual therapy, family therapy, discharge planning, case management, collateral contacts, doctor consultation, documentation, etc.
2. Adult/Eating Disorder Track (2 positions)
The interns in this position will spend 6 months in adult inpatient followed by 6 months in eating disorder outpatient or vice versa.
The Adult Inpatient Unit is located in the main behavioral health hospital. This 25 bed acute care unit serves patients with severe psychiatric disorders. The average length of treatment on this unit is 5-7 days. The intern on the Adult Unit is expected to fully manage a 3 patient caseload and is responsible for individual therapy, family therapy and support, discharge planning, case management, and consultation.
The Eating Disorder Program is located at Linden Oaks Hospital in Naperville, Illinois, and consists of Adolescent and Adult day Partial Hospitalization Programs and Intensive Outpatient Programs, along with an Evening Family Support Group. Theoretical orientations used in the program are Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Exposure and Response Prevention, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – Enhanced for Eating Disorders. The intern will carry a caseload of 5-6. Duties include individual therapy, family therapy, discharge planning, case management, collateral contacts, doctor consultation, documentation, etc.
3. Health Psychology Track (2 positions)
Interns in this position will recieve experiences with pain management, weight loss/bariatrics, and primary care integration.
The Behavioral Health Integration (BHI) Program offers a unique opportunity for interns to train throughout the Edward-Elmhurst Health Care System in primary care offices and specialty outpatient clinics including pain management and Endeavor Health Weight Management. The program uses a health psychology model to provide assessment, treatment planning, and brief, solution-focused models of treatment for a diverse patient population of both developmentally (childhood, adolescents, adults, and elderly) and ethnically and culturally diverse populations.
Additionally, there are opportunities for presurgical psychological testing of pain and weight loss patients. Opportunities to participate in Interdisciplinary Pain Grand Rounds and other activities are also available.
