Program Description

The Waterloo Region Psychology Consortium (WRPC) is a consortium of five partners for 2023-24 including Lutherwood (host organization), the University of Waterloo’s Campus Wellness, the Waterloo Region District School Board, Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington, and Grand River Hospital. Together, and with the approval of the CPA Accreditation Panel, we are able to offer three full time psychology residency positions for the 2023-24 training year, one working with adults, one working with children and adolescents, and one working with a combination of children and adults. The residency program began operation in September, 2013 and achieved accreditation as an Internship in Professional Psychology by the Canadian Psychological Association in 2017 for a term of five years. We are in the process of seeking re-accrediation for an additional period and anticipate a decision in the fall of 2022.

The training program develops clinicians to be capable of sound, independent professional functioning in the provision of psychological assessment, intervention and consultation. It builds on the base of knowledge and experience that residents have already begun to establish in graduate school and in previous clinical training placements. A healthy work-life balance and the development of professional identity is actively encouraged.

The consortium settings offer opportunities for residents to develop and hone their skills in working with  clients with complex and serious challenges, and we offer excellent breadth of training via rotations in diverse clinical settings. We encourage the development of clinical understanding within a variety of theoretical orientations.  Residents are expected to evaluate practice-related research and inform their clinical decisions with current evidence.

Every effort is made to individualize residents’ training opportunities to suit their particular interests and needs, and provide the degree of supervision necessary to facilitate gradually increasing independence while managing complex cases effectively.

WRPC and its member organizations are committed to equity and inclusion, and we foster a workplace culture that respects, appreciates, and values diversity in all aspects of individual identities. We strive to ensure an inclusive and accesible workplace and support residents who require accomodations - applicants are encouraged to contact the Training Director with regard to any questions or required accomodations.  WRPC acknowledges Canada’s history of colonialism and systemic racism and the need for structural and institutional change.  We are committed to the work of anti-racism, anti-discrimination, and anti-oppression in the field of psychology and in our broader systems and society.

Psychological services provided through the Waterloo Region Psychology Consortium are regulated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario and are offered in accordance with the relevant legislative acts and professional standards, guidelines, and codes of ethics.

Further information is available at: Predoctoral Psychology Residency | Lutherwood  - links can be found on this page for the WRPC Residency Guide (which contains further detail on our program, rotations, eligibility and application requirements), as well as our Policy and Procedure Manual.

In addition to being members of APPIC, the WRPC is a member of the Canadian Council of Professional Psychology Programs  (CCPPP:  www.ccppp.ca), and are listed on their Internship Directory: http://ccppp.ca/index.php/en/directory/C6.

Our program is not accepting applications for the 2024-25 training year.
