Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC EP) - The intern will provide outpatient mental health services to children, adolescents, and adults through: individual, dyadic, and group therapies; psychological assessments and testing; psychoeducation and outreach; and consultation. Opportunities to provide clinical services in Spanish will be provided. Depending on availability and interest, the intern may also engage in supervision of medical residents, staff trainings, outreach, teaching, and/or research throughout the internship year. In addition to weekly EPPIC seminars and didactics, the intern will have multiple opportunities for professional development, such as: multidisciplinary didactics; journal club meetings; grand rounds; and other seminars, webinars, and workshops hosted within our academic medical center campus. Due to the multicultural focus at EPPIC, interns placed at TTUHSC El Paso will be required to participate in TTUHSC EP’s Diversity Inclusion & Global Health Committee seminars and grand rounds, as time permits. UTEP - Counseling and Psychological Services: Interns participate in a variety of activities at the University Counseling Center which include triage, intake and crisis intervention; individual and group counseling; career and disabilities assessment; consultation and outreach services; and provision of supervision. Interns also engage in scholarly research activities which include case presentations, seminar assignments, and program development. Interns from both sites can choose from a variety or minor rotations offered at both UTEP and TTUHSC to add breadth to their training experience.

Interview process description:

Applicants selected to interview for a position with the EPPIC Consortium will be interviewed via video conference. If interns are not able to access video conferencing equipment, EPPIC will perform interviews by phone. Interviewees will be e-mailed an itinerary of the interview process which will include the time of their interview, a timeline and instructions for video conferencing. Applicants will be interviewed by at least one representative from each consortium site. As interns may be selecting rotations from different sites, we feel it important that all sites are represented in the interview session. The interview will last from 45 minutes to one hour. The interview format will be similar for each applicant. The interview form used by the interview committee consists of a set of general interview questions, as well as site specific questions. Interview questions will be rated on a 6 point Likert scale. All applicants will be asked the general interview questions. Site specific questions asked will depend on the primary site(s) for which the applicant is applying. Once the formal interview is complete, the applicant will be given time to address the interview committee with questions regarding the training sites, the training program, special interests, surrounding area, or any other questions for clarification. After the formal interview, applicants are given the opportunity to speak with current interns in an "off the record" meeting that lasts 30 minutes to 60 minutes. Applicants have the opportunity to talk to current interns about the interns' experiences in EPPIC. The applicant will then be dismissed and the interview committee will take a few minutes to discuss and share impressions and complete their rating form. Following the interview, an e-mail will be sent to each applicant thanking them for their time and interest in the program and will include contact information for additional questions. The El Paso Psychology Internship Consortium does not perform in-person interviews; however, prospective interns are welcome to schedule a site visit. Representatives of the EPPIC are more than willing to provide prospective interns with a tour of the training sites and a chance to meet some of the training faculty during their visit.

Program Description

The mission of the El Paso Psychology Internship Consortium (EPPIC) is to provide a comprehensive training program for doctoral interns in psychology, in order to prepare competent psychologists and effective multicultural therapists. The internship consortium was created in August 2012 with the express purpose of pooling resources to develop a unique and well-rounded experience for doctoral psychology interns.  The overarching goal of the program is to provide interns with a broad and general training experience in order to cultivate their skill and professional identity as psychologists.

The consortium was developed to be a one-year, 2000 hour, full time internship training program.  The consortium consists of two primary sites: Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso - Department of Psychiatry and University of Texas at El Paso – Counseling and Psychological Services.  Potential candidates can apply specifically for the site(s) of their choosing, as each will be designated with a separate APPIC Match number.  Training sites within the consortium provide the same overarching EPPIC curriculum which includes didactic training, clinical exposure, and supervision. The curriculum was designed to facilitate the development of a strong professional identity and well developed clinical skills.  Interns will have a primary placement at a single training site, where they will spend the majority of their time. Interns will also have the opportunity to choose from several elective rotations offered within their primary site or the other training sites, in order to tailor their training to their individual interests and further diversify and enhance their internship experience.

The El Paso Psychology Internship Consortium is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).  The EPPIC is currently a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) and participates in the National Match.
