The goal of the doctoral psychology internship program at Northern Arizona Healthcare is to provide the intern with a year of intensive exposure to a wide variety of clinical experiences, with a particular emphasis on integrated medical care, in the context of a healthcare organization that is committed to the community and region it serves. Centered in Flagstaff, Arizona, Northern Arizona Healthcare serves a population that is typical of the Southwest. Following a cognitive behavioral theoretical model, training is designed to promote the personal and clinical growth of the intern. The program is not directed at the development of a specialization. However, it is expected that the intern will develop an interest and proficiency in an area covered by the internship.
The internship is for a minimum of 2000 hours with a minimum of 500 direct service hours over the course of a year, starting in August and ending after the completion of 2000 hours. The intern is expected to spend 40 hours a week in training and related activities. These activities may include:
Behavioral Health inpatient assessment and treatment
Behavioral Health outpatient assessment and treatment
Integrated Behavioral Health in Primary Care
Neuropsychological screening
Consultation-liaison assessment and brief intervention
Assessment and group therapy/treatment for bariatric surgery patients
Assessment of Veterans of US Armed Services
Other as determined by training director and intern in the context of the internship contract
Flagstaff is a diverse city with a population of 66,000, and an altitude of 7,000 feet. Flagstaff Medical Center, part of Northern Arizona Healthcare, is the only Trauma level 1 hospital north of Phoenix. Northern Arizona University is also located in Flagstaff.
