Applicants will be notified regarding interview status by 12-10-18. Interviews will be held between 12-17-18 and 02-01-19. Applicants may arrange for on-site or video conference interviews depending upon their availability and preference. While no preference will be given to those who interview in person, it is recommended that serious applicants attempt to arrange an interview at the hospital to ensure they have a better understanding of the inpatient setting, particularly if they have no prior inpatient experience. These applicants will also be provided a brief tour of the facility and training office. Efforts will also be made to ensure applicants can briefly visit with current interns so that they may share their perspectives on their current internship experiences. However, applicants who interview through video conferencing may also be able to call or email current interns as well. When possible, interviews will be conducted with both the Psychology Training Director and the other inpatient psychology supervisor. Interviews are typically scheduled for 1 hour. Interviews will be geared toward answering applicant questions and asking a series of standard questions pertaining to ethical issues, supervision, therapy and assessment interests and experiences, and professional goals.
The internship setting is an inpatient psychiatric hospital affiliated with the larger network of Truman hospitals and outpatient clinics. The inpatient facility is comprised of two 25-bed acute units. These units serve a highly diverse patient population in the Kansas City metropolitan area, particularly in the downtown area. Interns will provide services on each of the acute units, including individual therapy, group therapy, and psychological assessment. Interns will also participate in regularly scheduled treatment team meetings comprised of multiple professionals of various disciplines. There are also additional training opportunities available, such as witnessing civil commitment hearings, and interns will gain supervision practice with practicum students and master's level interns when available. The goal of the acute rotations is to ensure that interns achieve an intermediate to advanced level of proficiency in providing professional assessment, intervention, and consultation services that are firmly grounded in psychological science. Individual supervision will be provided by two staff psychologists who are present full time on the inpatient units. Each supervisor will generally provide intensive supervision for either therapy or assessment. Interns will also participate in group supervision provided by additional licensed psychologists within the larger Truman organization. Each week also provides a wide range of educational opportunities, including grand rounds with the department of psychiatry, case conferences, didactics presentations, and weekly assessment seminar.
