Program Description

The Catholic Diocese of Arlington-Catholic Charities Pre-doctoral Residency Training Program (CCDA-RTP) is located in the Arlington Diocese in Northern Virginia. The Diocese was founded in 1974 and is comprised of 21 counties, ranging from the metropolitan area adjacent to Washington DC, to the mountains in the Shenandoah valley, to the southern regions of the Chesapeake Bay.  There are 70 parishes and 41 diocesan schools, and over 450,000 registered Catholics, although in the training program residents will encounter and serve people from a diverse range of faiths, or no faith at all (Total Population in the Arlington Diocese boundaries: ~3 million).

The CCDA-RTP consists of training sites within the Diocesan structure (Tribunal, Permanent Diaconate, Office for Family Life, Office for Schools) and within Catholic Charities (Family Services Department, Transitional Housing programs). Residents in the Program spend two days/week at their Family Services Counseling site seeing outpatient clients.  Other days are split between  the Tribunal,  other Diocesan departments or offices., and other Catholic Charities programs such as the transitional housing facilities  Seminars are held on a regular basis with the following emphases:  an average of 2 times/month seminars dedicated to increasing skills in psychotherapy and psychological evaluation in a manner consistent with the Program mission; 1 time/month seminars teaching unique aspects of consultation in the marriage tribunal; 1 time/month seminars on cultural diversity; and 1 time/month seminars on special topics taught by various clinical staff, program directors, or clergy members from the different Program sites.
