Interview process description:

Application Deadline 11/7/2017. In person and phone interviews are held by invitation only. In-person interview dates will be held on Monday January 15th, 2018, and if necessary, Friday January 19th, 2018. In person interviews are preferred but, when necessary, arrangement can be made for applicants to be interviewed by phone. Applicants will be notified via email by 12/15/2017 regarding their interview status, i.e., whether an invitation to interview will be extended.

Our approach to the internship selection process is to extend interview offers only to applicants whose interests and credentials show "goodness of fit" with what our program offers as far as training philosopy, clinical experiences, faculty, and facilities. We do not want anyone to expend the time and resources to travel to our Temple, Texas campus unless we are seriously considering their application.

The interview day starts at 8:00am with a welcome and introduction to the program given by the Training Director, followed by individual interviews with training staff psychologists and post-doctoral psychology fellows, a group meeting with the Training Director for Q&A, and a group interview with the current psychology interns.  Breakfast pastries and coffee are provided in the morning and lunch is served towards noon at the end of the half-day interview schedule. Those applicants whose travel plans permit them to stay on site into the early afternoon have the option of touring our medical campus facilities guided by the current interns. All activities will conclude by 2:00pm Central time.

Applicants must register for the APPIC match and select our internship slots in order to be matched to Scott & White Psychology Internship Program. The program description and program brochure are accessible from the World Wide Web.

Program Description

Scott & White Psychology Internship Program in Health Service Psychology is an APA-accredited internship affiliated with Baylor Scott & White Health, the largest nonprofit healthcare system in Texas, and a teaching site for the Texas A&M University (TAMU) College of Medicine (COM). With hospital and clinic facilities concentrated in Temple, Texas, the Scott & White Psychology Internship Program features two adult positions for interns interested in generalized clinical training in a multi-specialty health care environment. Interns are prepared for entry-level positions in the field of health service psychology or post-doctoral supervised professional experience generally required for licensure.

The mission of the Scott & White Psychology Internship Program in Health Service Psychology is to provide broad-based clinical training in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment with a diverse population of patients. Interns spend two days per week throughout the training year in the Mental Health Center seeing ambulatory adult patients for consultation, psychometric testing, and psychotherapy. In addition, interns complete four 3-month rotations (two days per week) designed to provide training exposure in various dimensions of health service psychology within a large multi-specialty clinic/hospital setting. Required rotations include Inpatient Psychiatry and Clinical Health Psychology. Interns also choose two elective rotations from four other options: Neuropsychology, Supportive and Palliative Care, Primary Care Psychology, and Research. This arrangement gives interns some flexibility in crafting their training experience. More information about the rotations and their specific activities can be found in our website brochure.

Interns receive four hours of supervision a week, including two hours of individual supervision (one hour with their clinic supervisor and one hour with their rotation supervisor). As part of the Monday afternoon didactic seminar series, another two hours of supervision come through proctored case presentations and group supervision. The program allows professional learning to evolve at an optimal pace, by incorporating graduated, sequential training drawn on the scientific basis of psychology. Because interns bring their own unique competencies, the program’s task is to build upon these existing skills.

Interns have the opportunity to collaborate with professionals from other disciplines including: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, and Recreational Therapists. These collaborations give interns the experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams designed to meet the healthcare needs of an increasingly diverse population of Texans.

Baylor Scott & White Health exists to serve all people by providing personalized health and wellness through exemplary health care, education and research as a Christian ministry of healing. Baylor Scott & White Health Central Texas Division is recognized on a national basis, consistently earning the “Top 100 Hospital” designation by Truven Health Analysis (formerly Thompson Reuters). Scott & White Medical Center - Temple was named one of the best hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for Texas Prairies and Lakes Region for three consecutive years.

We seek applicants who are well-educated in academic knowledge of clinical psychology, who have obtained practicum experiences in more than one clinical setting, who communicate well orally and in writing, and who are curious, flexible, and show initiative. We provide interns with broad-based clinical experiences in a supportive, encouraging learning atmosphere augmented by supervision and didactic instruction designed to enhance one’s professional development toward a career in health service psychology.

Interns receive a stipend of $25,099 for the training year, paid in biweekly installments, along with generous fringe benefits including 15 days of vacation, 13 days of sick leave, 5 days of educational leave, professional liability insurance, and health insurance through Scott & White Health Plan, including (optional) additional coverage for legally married partner and family members. Additional (optional) coverage available for dental insurance (including dependents) and for death and dismemberment insurance. Additional benefits include free parking, funding assistance for research presentations at state/national professional meetings, free onsite gym, and retirement matching program.

The internship year begins on July 1, 2018. Baylor Scott & White Health requires incoming trainees to attend a paid, one-week Graduate Medical Education (GME) pre-service orientation in the last week of June prior to their 12-month contract.
