Established in 1989, IMCES has trained innumerable clinicians to integrate and apply cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic and family systems based interventions with clients from every socioeconomic background and ethnicity. Multicultural awareness, evidenced based practice (EBP), and community defined practice (CDP) are incorporated in IMCES's training program. The Mission of our organization is promoting social justice and human rights through DIRECT SERVICE to underserved culturally diverse target populations with the aim of reducing disparity in availability and accessibility of mental health services in our community; and WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT in a Clinical Training Program structured to engage new and emerging mental health professionals from different cultural backgrounds to motivate their professional commitment and responsiveness to serve the most needy population with their competencies in best practices. The training program's philosophy follows a practitioner-scholar model of training, committed to the scientific method of enquiry. This paradigm seeks a balance between familiarity with clinical psychological research and practical application of this knowledge. The philosophy of the training program advances IMCES's mission to provide culturally responsive, competent and linguistically appropriate services. Interns participate in a variety of clinical programs that serve individuals and families from a broad range of cultures and ages. Interventions take place in a variety of settings, both in the office and the field, which includes schools, homes and residential placements (board & care, shelters etc.). We work with families within the community setting, with a major emphasis on coordinating other resources. IMCES provides team supervision, multiple didactic seminars (Psychotherapy, Cultural Diversity and Advocacy Skill Building, Assessment, Law & Ethics, Risk Assessment and Intervention - and more), and participation in multidisciplinary treatment teams. IMCES seeks to provide an opportunity for doctoral interns to learn to apply and demonstrate intermediate to advanced skills of direct clinical psychology services, in an ethical, culturally responsive, sensitive and competent manner. Interns have the opportunity to become certified in at least two Evidence Based Practices (EBPs). Upon completion of the program, the intern should exhibit greater capacity for self-awareness and self-evaluation, a commitment to the highest standards of professional practice, continuing education, and clinical skills commensurate with their professional level of development.
