The Chicago School Community Internship Consortium (CIC) is housed within The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and partners with Pillars Community Services, Lawrence Hall Youth Services, and The Chicago School Forensic Center. These community agencies allow the CIC’s doctoral interns the opportunity to gain clinical training within community mental health, residential, and civic forensic settings. The Chicago School oversees the provision of clinical training and supervision. The mission of the CIC is to meet the APA’s best practice and professional standards of internship training, while providing the trainees with a strong clinical foundation in serving marginalized communities. Our training model is that of the “practioner-scholar,” offering hands-on experience complemented by access to and knowledge of relevant psychological science. Using a developmental model for the foundation of training, the interns are exposed to clinical cases that gain diagnostic depth throughout the year as well as shifting clinical focus from the individual level to awareness around systemic factors and multidisciplinary perspectives. This process is supported through formative feedback as well as increased scholarly and leadership opportunities as the year progresses.
The CIC program is a full-time, 12-month, 2000 hour program, beginning in mid- August. The intern cohort will consist of 7 doctoral interns, with three positions at Pillars, two positions at Lawrence Hall Youth Services, and two positions at The Chicago School Forensic Center. Each intern will spend at least four days per week at his/her consortium agency and one-half to one full day per week of training and supervision at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (with opportunities to visit each site during the year).
Interns will primarily engage in direct clinical services, consultation, outreach, and scholarly activities. In this role, interns will engage in approximately 20-25 hours of weekly face-to-face clinical time. At the outset of the training year, each intern will complete a Training Contract with his/her primary supervisor, outlining the goals, requirements, and activities within the training experience.
In addition to their site duties and responsibilities, interns participate in cohort learning activities that takes place on Mondays. The cohort learning experiences include: 1) a didactic series that features guest speakers, workshops, and case presentations, and 2) “Supervision of supervision” and (3) Group supervision which focuses on professional and clinical development. Each intern will participate in a minimum of two hours of individual supervision per week with supervisors who are a part of their training team. The CIC training team meets regularly to discuss and collaborate on each trainee’s progress, goals, and development.
The CIC has been designed to meet APPIC standards, as well as APA accreditation requirements. The program is APPIC accredited and is pursuing APA accreditation. Furthermore, the CIC is partially affiliated with The Chicago School and therefore applications are weighted to give priority to applicants from The Chicago School.
Training in the CIC involces special attention to multicultural competence and appreciation for the crucial role of diversity factors in the work of a psychologist. As such, we are particualrly interested in applications from trainees whose experiences and backgrounds reflect elements of diversity. Through expanding the perspectives of our clinical team to encompass the voices of the community, the CIC as a whole is better able to address the needs of our clients within the community.
