Program Description

The UND University Counseling Center (UCC) Doctoral Internship Program utilizes a General Practitioner Training model to provide a high-quality training experience to 2 doctoral interns in individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, diagnostics and psychological assessment, substance use assessment and intervention, supervision provision, consultation, and outreach and programming development, with the scaffolding and support of licensed supervisors and skilled staff. It is our aim that upon successful completion of the program, interns will have surpassed the fundamental skills necessary to launch professional careers as leading health service psychologists in an array of clinical settings including and beyond a university counseling center. Evidence-based practice, science, and research are all important foundations that inform the UCC’s services and training program, with careful attention to APA-established competencies in ethical and legal standards, intervention, assessment, supervision, individual and cultural diversity, professional values and attitudes, communication and interpersonal skills, consultation and inter-professional/interdisciplinary skills, and research.

Services at the UCC are provided to the UND student population and to faculty and staff in support of student wellness. Most students are from North Dakota and Minnesota, making up 59% of the student population. Nearly equal amounts of men and women attend UND and 25% of students report non-white race/ethnicity. A wide range of diagnostic concerns and presentations are accounted for within our center and provide the opportunity to develop the skills of a general practitioner. In addition, unique characteristics of our student population, such as those in the aviation field of study, and students from rural communities, allow for the development of nuanced skill sets.

Interns are provided with their own offices within the UCC and a $40,000 stipend for the year, as well as applicable benefits, allowing for a comfortable standard of living in Grand Forks, North Dakota. UND is the only university in the country that is home to a medical school, law school, and schools of aviation and aerospace science, affording interns the unique opportunity to provide services to these specific populations and gain specialized skills in mind-body medicine; case conference, grand rounds, and didactics with the UND School of Medicine Dept. of Psychiatry and Health Sciences; and aviation counseling and assessment. Interns receive weekly individual supervision, group supervision, supervision of supervision, didactics and training seminar, staffing and case conference, bi-weekly integrated staffing with Student Health Services, and monthly meetings with the training director to maximize intern personal and professional development. Special attention is also provided to interns’ specific interests, skill sets, and professional goals. Upon hire, interns will be required to complete a background check as part of standard UND hiring procedures (https://campus.und.edu/human-resources/_files/docs/chbc/chbc-form-hw-edits.pdf). The Internship Brochure contains detailed information about the training program (https://und.edu/student-life/counseling-center/education/_files/docs/training-brochure.pdf) and further questions are welcomed by the training director, Jaryn Allen, Ph.D., LP (she/her) at jaryn.allen@und.edu.
