Program Description

The Virginia Treatment Center for Children (VTCC) is part of the preeminent Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center (formerly Medical College of Virginia). The predoctoral internship in clinical psychology at VTCC has been accredited by the APA since 1975 and is a member of APPIC. Major rotations include: child/adolescent acute psychiatric treatment, outpatient child/adolescent and family therapy, child/adolescent psychological evaluation, and pediatric consultation.  VTCC is a child/adolescent psychiatric facility with acute and outpatient treatment programs for children, adolescents and their families experiencing severe emotional disturbance. VTCC treatment teams are interdisciplinary with faculty, staff, and trainees from disciplines of psychology, psychiatry, social work, nursing, education, occupational and recreation therapies, speech/language therapy, and music and art therapies.  Interns also provide consultation to pediatric inpatient units and clinics.  The VTCC psychology faculty are committed to providing interns with the opportunity to develop skills in therapy, assessment, and consultation using theoretically grounded and empirically supported techniques with children, adolescents, and their families from diverse backgrounds, within a supportive training environment. Training is presented through a strong didactic series, supervision from faculty holding a variety of theoretical orientations, and diverse clinical experiences.
