Intern applicants are invited in late November to interviews, typically conducted on each Monday or Tuesday in January. Six to twelve intern applicants interview on each day, individually meeting two faculty members and one current intern in three 30-minute sessions. There is also a 30-minute meeting with one of the Co-Director of Training. All intern applicants are invited to attend a luncheon during which they meet the current interns and are encouraged to have candid discussions with the interns without the presence of faculty members. Tour of campus is included.
The EVMS internship employs a practitioner-scholar training model and provides exposure to a variety of teaching styles and professional models. Training goals include further development of assessment and psychotherapy skills with a wide range of client populations and leadership, interdisciplinary and consultative skills within a medical center setting. Opportunities for clinical research are also available and our settings allow interns to integrate ethical and administrative issues into an appreciation for treatment issues.The intern completes major rotations consisting of assignment to adult or pediatric facilities. Interns spend 24-32 hours per week in the major rotation. Currently, we offer major rotations in Adult Inpatient-Medical; Adult Inpatient-Psychiatric; Pediatric Behavioral Medicine and Child Abuse Assessment and Treatment. Each of the child focused major rotations are 12 months in length. The adult focused rotations are 6 months in length. While on the Adult Inpatient-Medical rotation the intern will spending 6 months on a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit and 6 months working with the Consultation Liaison Psychiatry team at a local medical hospital. While on the Adult Inpatient-Psychiatric rotation the intern will spending 6 months on a Forensic Unit and 6 months on an Acute Admissions Unit at a local state psychiatric hospital. The major rotations provide opportunities for conducting personality, intellectual and neuropsychological assessments; participating in inter-professional treatment teams; and providing group, family and/or individual psychotherapy. Some interns also complete minor rotations. Minors are in a domain tailored to meet the individual intern's needs. Recent minor rotations have included behavioral medicine, neuropsychology, eating disorders, bariatrics, primary care psychology, sleep disorders, and clinical research.
All interns carry a limited outpatient caseload which provides an opportunity for longer term therapy than that provided by their six-month rotations. Efforts are made to assign supervisors based on the intern's interests with respect to therapeutic modality and patient population. Didactics are offered throughout the year in areas such as behavioral medicine, child and adolescent assessment and psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, sleep disorders, neuropsychology, ethics, professional development and advanced personality assessment.
