Interview process description:	Interviews will take place at Friends Hospital for the adult track and/or Foundations Behavioral Health for the child/ adolescent track in December/January, and will consist of a information sessions, a tour of the facility, a virtual tour and/or description of the other rotation sites,group and individual interviews with department faculty, and an opportunity to have lunch with the current intern cohort as applicable. Applicants can expect to spend up to a full day on-site. Applicants will be notified via email of an offer to interview, along with a selection of dates to choose from for the interview. Given the present sate of the COVID 19 pandemic, a virtual interview abd tour also is offered but wi not be for entire day. The applicant can expect to have up to a 2 hour virtual interview with faculty

Program Description

Friends Hospital, founded in 1813, is the first private psychiatric hospital in the United States. Originally modeled after The Retreat, a Quaker asylum founded in York, England during the 18th century, the hospital is located in Northeast Philadelphia on a majestic 100-acre campus. Today, Friends Hospital provides recovery-oriented inpatient behavioral health services for a diverse population of individuals from the Philadelphia area. Friends Hospital is owned by Universal Health Services Inc., of Delaware (UHS), the largest national provider of inpatient services, and therefore has access to vast clinical expertise and resources including numerous local sister facilities.

Friends Hospital is proud to partner with several local UHS facilities to provide a variety of clinical rotations for the psychology internship. These facilities are Fairmount Behavioral Health System, and Foundations Behavioral Health (further information and descriptions of all of the clinical settings and the experiences offered for this internship is provided in Appendices III-VI of the Internship Handbook, which can be found on the Friends Hospital website as well as the APPIC Directory).

Friends Hospital and its sister facilities utilize a multidisciplinary approach, integrating professionals from psychiatry, psychology, nursing, social work, expressive arts, and chaplaincy. Treatment teams employ a recovery-oriented and empirically-supported approach to care.

Friends Hospital’s Internship in Clinical Psychology provides an opportunity for doctoral candidates in clinical, counseling, or school psychology to work under close supervision in a professional setting that is committed to the principles of recovery-oriented care and empirically-supported treatments in an Adult or Child/ Adolescent clinical track. The internship program employs a Practitioner-Scholar model of training and is grounded in cognitive and behavioral approaches to therapy, including integrated care interventions.

Throughout the course of the training year, interns participate in a one-year experience at their respective site (depending on their training goals and preferences) with primary clinical experiences in group therapy as well as individual therapy. Psychological assessment is an important part of the clinical training program, and interns complete integrated assessment batteries and several brief screenings. Interns receive weekly individual and group supervision, and attend regular didactic trainings provided by various speakers from within and outside of the facilities. Overall, Friends Hospital offers a large variety of clinical and professional training opportunities, and is committed to assisting interns in meeting their individual training needs.

Friends Hospital offers a salarty of $28,568, 21 paid time off days (which includes holidays, vacation, sick time, and professional days), health and dental benefits, and free parking.

Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years of academic training, 1400 total hours (25 testing, 450 face to face intervention hours- if in the child/adol track 250 of these hours need to be with this age-group population, plus supervision & support hours) of experience, group therapy and previous serious mental illness experience. Holiday and monthly weekend rotations are an expectation of the internship. The Friends Hospital internship is partially affiliated with the Psy.D. program in Clinical Psychology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) for the 2021-2022 match year, in which all applicants are granted an interview. However, the program does not have a dedicated number of internship positions for PCOM students; applications from other programs will be equally considered.

If selected by the match for internship, all interns are expected to attend a mandatory, paid, orientation training prior to the internship start date. A pre-employment drug test and clearances are required to attend internship.
