Other Requirements: Psychology interns must successfully participate in the same pre-employment screening process that is required of regular employees of MercyFirst. This process, which begins after the Match, includes: satisfactory completion of a medical exam and drug screen; "not indicated" response from the NYS child abuse registry; fingerprint screening for criminal record. A criminal history does not necessarily preclude employment, and each situation is considered individually. All MercyFirst employees, including psychology interns, may be called for random drug testing during their period of employment.
Program Description

We offer training in professional practice, with an emphasis on child/adolescent psychology. We utilize a Practitioner-Scholar training model in which interns develop skills in: assessment; intervention; relationship; consultation/management; research and evaluation. The focus is on experiential learning in supervised practice, supplemented by didactic seminars and workshops. Our population is largely made up of minority, lower income adolescents and pre-adolescents who present with histories of trauma and a wide range of psychopathology, from adjustment disorders through psychotic disorders. Each intern has a full-year placement on a primary treatment unit. In addition, interns provide assessment services to our residents, and interns may also have the opportunity to arrange an elective treatment placement in one of a number of settings. Supervisors' orientations are generally CBT. Under supervision, interns perform individual, group and family therapy, crisis intervention, treatment team consultation, milieu treatment, mental status evaluation interviews, psychological testing, risk assessments, and other clinical duties. In addition to our regularly scheduled seminars, we offer colloquia by guest speakers, and there are opportunities to participate in training meetings at nearby hospitals and universities.
