Program Description

The comprehensive psychiatry services and large faculty at each site bring a wide range of specialized training and theoretical orientations to the training program. The programs at each site are essentially the same, with shared philosophy of training and similar training experiences, serving a culturally diverse, city population. Interns are interviewed and selected for a specific site which serves as their home base throughout the training year. There are cross-site seminars. While there are some differences in certain electives, a core emphasis at both sites is the inpatient psychiatry experience where interns provide individual, group and family therapy for inpatients on their unit and participate as full members of the multidisciplinary team. Each site has PER, consultation liaison and adult outpatient training opportunities as well as unique specialty areas: psycho-oncology, pediatric neurodevelopmental assessment services, Family Advocacy Program, adult and pediatric HIV services, medical rehabilitation services and comprehensive substance abuse services including ambulatory detox, addiction consult, and outpatient day program (JMC); and a partial hospitalization program and a geriatric inpatient unit (NCB). Interns are required to complete two 4 month inpatient rotations and one 3-4 month elective rotation at NCB. At JMC, the second inpatient rotation may be exchanged for pediatric neuro developmental services, rehab medicine, psycho-oncology, bariatric surgery, consultation liaison or SUD service. At NCB, interns do 1 month in the PER. All interns are placed on a year-long outpatient site. Testing is a component of the training experience with Rorschach/Exner scoring required. Weekly, interns receive at least 4-5 hours of group and individual supervision.
