The internship at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a comprehensive training program encompassing the full-range of university counseling center and health service psychology activities. We train interns to be self-aware, scientifically-informed, and multiculturally competent in their ethical practice of psychology. Interns work with our diverse staff of psychologists and social workers to develop in their delivery of individual counseling, group intervention, crisis management, psychological assessment, supervision, consultation, and outreach prevention. Our center has particular opportunities in group, as interns have the chance to co-lead a variety of interpersonal process, structured, or workshop-style groups.
The training program is rooted in developmental framework and in conceptual understanding of use of self in clinical, supervision, and outreach programming practice. We believe interns learn best in a supportive and yet challenging atmosphere, where instruction, feedback, and encouragement help move them towards greater independence and atonomous practice. Ongoing training seminars for interns address topics which include individual and cultural diversity, assessment, case conference, supervision, and other specialty topics in the field. Additionally, interns participate with other staff members in professional development activities, mentoring, case conferences, and general center meetings as we work together to serve the needs of our diverse student community.
CAPS and the training program holds values of equity, social justice, and inclusion and integrates these values throughout the internship training program and activities. Interns are supported in their continuing development of cultural competence and culturally sensitive practice, particularly as their practice relates to racial equity.
