Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site An intern's day usually consists of a few individual clients, supervision activities of some sort (e.g., preparation for their own, or for supervision provided to a practicum student; attending supervision of supervision), some case management time (case notes, paperwork, consultation), and receiving supervision in one of the major skill areas (supervision, group counseling, outreach). An intern is expected to be in the office 8:30-5:00, with a half hour lunch. Many core aspects of our program may not be represented in a given day (e.g., attending staff meetings, committee involvement), but a full week is a good representation of life at SCS. There is a wide array of activities, and a fair amount of supervision received. Please contact us if you would like a better sense of life as an intern at SCS!

Program Description

This internship has been accredited by the APA since 1972 and has been engaged in training for over 50 years. We provide services to the University community, primarily serving the student body. Significant strengths of the program are intensive training in the provision of clinical supervision, ample opportunities to facilitate groups, and supervision of outreach activities.  SCS uses a brief counseling model, with session limits. Clients and counselors set mutually agreed-upon goals following the initial assessment process and work toward achieving those goals.  Our training philosophy emphasizes the application of scientific inquiry to clinical practice, building on existing competencies of interns, continuous improvement of the program via regularly scheduled evaluation, and providing the conditions to foster ongoing professional learning. Please see our website for greater detail.
