Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site At the start of internship year, each intern will develop an individualized learning contract, in which they select their primary inpatient training rotations for the year and any additional training experiences (e.g., outpatient rotations, other rotations). After orientation is completed, interns begin their clinical work. We value work-life balance but also expect that interns will have some additional work outside of the 40-hour-week during certain periods, especially if doing a writing-heavy rotation. Each week throughout the year, the intern will dedicate 20 hours to their primary (core) rotation (i.e., an inpatient SMI rotation for interns in the General/SMI track, and a forensic rotation for interns in the Forensic track); 16 hours to additional training opportunities (e.g., rotations in other clinical areas of interest); and 4 hours in didactics and group supervision. Interns are provided professional development time to defend their dissertations and attend/present at conferences.

(No in-person interviews will be scheduled).  Typically, we interview eight (8) applicants on each day with a total applicant pool of thirty-two (32) interviewees.  Each interviewee will have individual interviews with the Training Director(s) and three (3) to five (5) other supervisors. Interviewees will also be able to meet the current interns in a non-evaluative session to ask questions and gain an intern perspective of the internship.  The interns are not part of the Selection Committee and their feedback about applicants is not solicited by the Selection Committee.

Program Description

The University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (UMass Chan) and Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH) offer an APA-accredited doctoral internship in Clinical Psychology. Our overall focus is on the training of emerging psychologists in the public sector. Our mission is to provide learning experiences in the assessment of and intervention with individuals presenting with severe and persistent mental illness. We offer a variety of inpatient and outpatient rotations, and interns will be exposed to a broad range of ages, backgrounds, and types of psychopathology. We offer two tracks: a general track and a forensic evaluation track. Rotations include inpatient experiences at WRCH, outpatient therapy (adults, children, and families), forensic evaluations, domestic violence, health psychology and adult consult-liaison, adolescent outpatient testing and treatment, neuropsychology, primary care and family medicine, and neuropsychological testing. In addition to clinical rotations, interns will participate in a weekly didactic training seminar series, and the medical school holds grand rounds every week. Interns participate in both individual and group supervision. The Internship trains students in nine profession-wide competencies, i.e., Research; Ethical and Legal Standards; Individual and Cultural Diversity; Professional Values, Attitudes, and Behaviors; Communication and interpersonal Skills; Assessment; Evidence-based interventions; Supervision; and Consultation and Interprofessional/Interdisciplinary Skills.  Please review our website for further information and more detail about the training opportunities available: www.umassmed.edu/psychiatry/education/psychology_programs/internship
