Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Doctoral interns usually maintain a 9 am to 5 pm Monday - Friday schedule, with opportunities to shift their schedule based on their needs. Depending on the day, sometimes they may start earlier or end later but interns average about 40 - 50 hours weekly. Opportunities to work from home when report writing are also available. In an average day doctoral interns will provide diagnostic testing services to youth and families, as well as individual, group and family therapy services to youth placed in a treatment program at the YOC, identified for services through Muncie Community Schools, or placed at the juvenile detention center located on the YOC campus. When doctoral interns are not doing the aforementioned, they can be found attending team meetings, attending didactics, supervision, or collaborating with YOC staff.

Interview process description:

Typically three different days are offered for interviews (i.e. 01/03/2024, 01/10/2024, 01/17/2024).

Interviews this year will be held entirely via Zoom. However we are able to accomodate a tour of any applicant who wishes to see our campus. 

The interview day will consist of the following:

  • Interviews begin around 8:30am with an overview of the Psych. Services Department, brief overview of the YOC and the internship, and a virtual tour of campus.
  • Two to four individual interviews with different psychologist,
  • Question & discussion time with the current interns and/or post doctoral residents,
  • Written response to vignettes,

Program Description

The Youth Opportunity Center is a state-of-the-art, private, non-profit organization that specializes in a full continuum of residential treatment for children, adolescents, and their families. The YOC offers mental and behavioral health services for all levels of care. The campus-style setting features 4 residential programs, on-grounds school, Delaware County Juvenile Court, Delaware County Probation Department, Department of Child Services, and full psychological assessment services.

The facility is located on 75 wooded acres and has been specifically designed to provide optimum residential treatment options for a wide range of mental health needs. The internship program provides interns with opportunities to conduct individual, family, and group therapy as well as comprehensive psychological testing. Numerous training opportunities are provided with psychologists on-campus and psychologists and professionals in the community.

Interns will conduct court ordered comprehensive diagnostic testing and provide their results to the court and treatment team. Diagnostic testing is a large part of the clinical services that doctoral interns perform. Doctoral interns also get specialized training with a specific adolescent and child populations including those at local Muncie City Schools. Interns are exposed to a wide variety of childhood disorders, some in their most severe forms. Interns are encouraged to develop their abilities to provide individual, family and group therapy, make behavior plans, learn to work as a cohesive multi-disciplinary team, understand and work with Special Education case conferences, work with probation officers and DCS caseworkers, manage crises, attend and participate in court, provide parent training, and develop their psychological assessment and report writing skills.
