Please note that the interview dates above is tentative. Interviews are conducted on established days in January. Applicants are invited to interview in groups of 10-20. The day consists of a group presentation by the Director of Psychology Training in the morning, followed by a confidential meeting with current interns, and individual interviews with 3 faculty in the afternoon. For the current inteview cycle (January 2024) the interview day will be conducted virutally.
The internship is designed to provide trainees with opportunities to be engaged actively in the integration of clinical research and practice. We adhere to the principal that psychological practice is based on the science of psychology, which, in turn, is influenced by the professional practice of psychology. There are separate tracks in child and adult, although interns can select training opportunities across tracks. The internship offers a unique and rich training experience with children, adolescents, and adults, special populations, and individuals with cognitive and medical diagnoses. Interns may also work in schools, community agencies, or in the UIC hospital. Trainees gain practical and theoretical understanding of diagnosis, assessment, and intervention of a wide range of mental health concerns within a multidisciplinary urban mental health setting with a variety of patients of multi-ethnic origin. UIC receives referrals from many agencies and schools as well as departments within the University of Illinois Medical School and UIC campus. Individuals are also self-referred for clinical services. As such, we serve a diverse population. Many of our clients are from disadvantaged backgrounds, and many come to us with multiple problems. Our clinical services and clinical research grants provide the means by which we fulfill our primary responsibility for services training and research. The main program aims include: Intensive training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental disorders in the clinical science model, in which clinical practice and research are integrated. Training culturally sensitive psychologists by providing broad clinical experience across a variety of settings and populations with specific attention to issues related to individual differences and cultural diversity. Preparing interns for clinical research careers in academic, mental health, and medical settings, in the public or private sector. Please note that we have multilple opportunities for service provision and supervision in Spanish.
