Program Description

The internship at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at Colonial Health Center (CHC) is a full-time, 12-month internship experience, in which interns can expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of the clinical presentations of the college student population, as well as the essential considerations when working within a university community.  Our internship places an emphasis on training in individual and group psychotherapy, crisis assessment, crisis intervention/management, initial assessment, consultation, and outreach.  Many GW students access the CAPS. Other activities include weekly case conference, psychiatric consultation twice monthly, participation in staff professional development opportunities, and an intern training seminar on a variety of clinical and professional topics.  We value diversity, and strive to promote multicultural competence throughout the staff and the training program. To that end, interns participate in a weekly diversity seminar that is both didactic and experiential in order to assist interns in their self-awareness around their own identities and how those identities influence their work with clients and in the broader university system. Supervision is a value, and supervisors work with interns to understand their training goals and strategize ways to accomplish these goals during their year.
