Brief description of the typical work day for an intern at this training site Interns may serve on one of three rotations (Team-Based Psychology, Trauma Informed Care, and Neuro-Rehab) and often begin the day attending Morning Report to review clients' progress with the multi-disciplinary team. In the course of a typical day, interns may then co-lead a therapy group, do individual therapy, conduct a psychological assessment, participate in an interdisciplinary meeting, or attend supervision or a didactic session. On Fridays, interns attend didactic seminars at the University of Denver Graduate School of Professional Psychology.

Program Description

The Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHIFL)  has been independently accredited as an internship since the 1960's. Beginning with the intern class of 2019-2020, we are affiliating with the University of Denver Internship Consortium. CMHIFL is a publicly funded psychiatric hospital that provides interns the experience of working with individuals with serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI) in a recovery-oriented treatment program which emphasizes trauma-informed care.  Interns may have the opportunity to work in up to three different major rotations including Team-Based Psychology, Trauma Informed Care, and Neuro-Rehab service. The Neuro-Rehab rotation will be limited to one intern per year and is not a guaranteed experience. In each rotation, interns have the opportunity to serve as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team providing individual and group treatment, psychological assessment, neuropsychological screening and testing, and case consultation. Interns have the opportunity to provide co-therapy and receive close supervision and observation with a team of highly experienced psychologists.  The aim of the internship at CMHIFL is to provide experiential opportunities working with individuals with SPMI as well as excellent supervision, in the areas of assessment, treatment, consultation, supervision, cultural diversity/individual differences, the integration of science and practice, and the demonstration of professional and ethical behavior.   Attracting, training, and supporting interns from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic, religious, sexual orientation, and other varied backgrounds is a critical value of our internship. This reflects our training focus with respect to working with seriously and persistently mentally ill clients in a public setting. The population is diverse and historically underserved and we strive to maximize our interns' ability to work with and reflect that diversity.
